Sights and insights

The Outlaws Who Built Manhattan is superb as all the others have been. Beautifully structured, thoroughly researched, delivered with clarity and enthusiasm, and enlightening from start to finish. And fun, even. If you compared the Purefinder tours to other New York walking tours, you would say they are by far the best. But you can't compare them. They are literally incomparable. Well-chosen slices of the always interesting New York story, and fascinating looks at the often-unknown people that make the story, vividly brought to life.

Utterly enthralling

Krombie’s tour showed me a side of NYC I never knew existed. I was awestruck by her knowledge, empathy, inclusiveness and wonderful humour. I walk with a cane, and she made the tour so accessible and safe. The best tour I’ve ever done in any part of the world.

Excellent!

A wonderful tour! Krombie is so knowledgeable and funny, she carefully curated this tour to showcase the various circles of society that influenced Oppenheimer's upbringing, moral philosophy, and career. We heard about the thriving expat Jewish community on the Upper West Side, along with the intellectual, scientific, and artistic circles that influenced him. Even though this is a relatively new Purefinder tour, Krombie seems like she already has an excellent grasp of material and was happy to answer questions or elaborate further. Highly recommend, looking forward to another tour with her soon!

A delightful and thought provoking idea for a date or tour with friends!

We loved the Oppenheimer tour. It was compelling, eye-opening, and thought provoking. Our guide was brilliantly informed, and find ways to tie so many different movements of the time into the conversation. So while it was Oppenheimer focused, you really got a sense of society, politics and the city at the time!

Purefinder is a great find!

Second tour with Purefinder . Highly educational walking tour filled with Krombie’s endless knowledge and theatrical delivery. My partner is a lifelong New Yorker and we have both lived on the upper west side for many years. We had no idea that Oppenheimer, his ancestors, and his children had such a presence and influence here. Many cool factoids about the man and his contemporaries who resided here. These tours are the best in NYC for sure.

Such a good tour in NYC.

I have done this tour twice now and let me just say, it is so worth doing (multiple times even!). I enjoy it so much and just hearing about how the city has handled death over time is fascinating. Krombie is the best tour guide and she has so much great information which she conveys in such a fantastic way. She keeps you so engaged throughout the whole tour which is great! I cannot rave about this tour enough!

Very stimulating, entertaining and informative three hours. Well researched and presented. Moves from the history of early asylums to the arrival of psychoanalysis from Central Europe with plenty of fascinating diversions along the way. Highly recommend. Great way to spend an afternoon. FG

Krombie is hands down, one of the best storytellers I’ve ever met. I went on the extended version of her Death in New York: Extended tour.

Krombie’s tour is meticulously organized, with information presented in an enticing and logical way for patrons to easily absorb. Whether you have minimal knowledge of the subject matter (me) of have read her book, you will enjoy the experience.

A few highlights include:
- visiting the “gentleman’s cemetery”
- standing on a site of 120,000 corpses
- the unique anecdote that pertains to the Lincolns and the Booths

This was one of the best walking tours we've ever done. K. is full of deep and detailed knowledge, she explains everything very well, has a fantastic witty humour and one discovers places in NYC you would never see or notice without her. The tour is 3 hours and every second is worth it! Simply fantastic and there are so many historic facts, stories, secrets - we immediately ordered her book and can't wait to indulge in it.
Highly recommend this interesting tour and wonderful K.

Krombie's "Death in New York" is excellent! I highly recommend this tour because it offers more than just macabre tales - it's also a fun and engaging look at New York's history. Krombie's strengths lie in her vast knowledge of the city, sharp sense of humor, and warm personality that shines through.

As a lifelong New Yorker, I was surprised to gain new insight into places I pass daily but had no idea of their importance. Krombie brought these spots to life with her captivating storytelling.

This is a truly unique tour that teaches you about New York while also entertaining you. I highly suggest taking Krombie's tour for an experience you won't forget.

“If, like I do, you need a tour that's really interesting and / or on a very niche topic, why not follow who literally wrote the book on it? Whether you're a long-time new yorker, a frequent visitor, or or simply a tourist who nonetheless wants to stay off the beaten path, this is for you. Like an urban Charon, K. will lead you through Hell gate, literally the once turbulent tidal strait that separates Astoria from Randall's/Wards islands, and metaphorically, the stretch in the East River where New York City tries to wash all its dirty laundry or at least to keep it out of sight. This tour, charmingly narrated, comprehensive, and meticulously researched, and is a fun, 3h romp through rarely seen spaces and forgotten times alike. It might well be the best I've taken in the city. So I'm looking forward to taking the Death in NY tour as well as the Psychiatry in the UES that K also developed and leads, and to reading the corresponding books she authored, one of which is available while the other is forthcoming.”

I just took the Psychiatry in New York Tour and it was just exceptional. One of the best walking tours I've ever done, and I've done plenty. Full of interesting information, beautifully delivered by Krombie. I'm amazed that she could put the information together so well and make it so interesting, and doubly amazed that she could map it all out in a single section of the City. A must for locals and tourists alike

We were REALLY impressed with this tour. The tour guide is incredibly well versed in the topic at hand. She has researched, and committed to memory, an impressive amount of detail and very effectively selected the most interesting facets of her book (of the same name) to create a unique experience like nothing else on offer in the area. Her delivery is impeccable - engaging, succinct, and executed with passion and humour. As a local, you are bound to learn something new and as a tourist, you will be astounded by the fascinating history of the area! Very very highly recommend this absolute gem.

I work in the mental health system so I think I know a fair bit about the history and intricacies but I learned so, so many things on this tour! I left the tour with a long list of things to research further when I got home. K has an incredible amount of knowledge and expresses it in a very engaging and interesting way. It’s amazing to see how much of this history happened in New York. One of the highlights to me was how K always spoke with respect and dignity for people who were suffering or institutionalised, never poking fun at them or ridiculing them but highlighting the cultural and societal barriers that they faced throughout history. Fabulous tour - I can recommend it to all mental health professionals.

Krombie is an exceptional tour guide! First, there was a misunderstanding in my learning of the initial meeting point a month ago. She tried earnestly to get me to where they were at that day, it simply wasn’t a go, as I was miles away from where they were at. She graciously invited me to her next meet up for the same event, I was so taken aback at the superior customer service, I decided to come to this event. She took us from Wards Island over into Randall’s Island, all throughout had brief stopping points to discuss in thorough detail—by a near 100% memory the history that went behind Hell’s Gate and everything that encompassed it. She was captivating, FUNNY, interesting and made the tour a good one!! This is a tour that should not be missed!!!

Even a cold, rainy and dreary day in what should be spring in NYC couldn't stop Krombie from leading her fantastic tour of the Psychiatric history of NY. For those seeking old artifacts, ruins or the ghosts of lost souls, look elsewhere - those things won't be found on this tour. What you will find is a plethora of knowledge on the history of psychiatry and how it shaped the past and present of NYC. Krombie enthusiastically weaves together a compelling tale of people and places leading us to the state of mental health care in NYC (and the United States) today, with some fascinating twists along the way. For a fun activity off the beaten, I highly recommend spending an afternoon with Krombie and Purefinder.

I took the History of Psychiatry in New York tour on a cold December afternoon and loved it! Krombie is a skilled storyteller who seamlessly wove together carefully researched social and medical history with a bit of celebrity gossip and architectural criticism. I think this tour would appeal to anyone with an interest in psychiatry or NYC history, regardless of one’s level of knowledge of either, or really anyone who wants to spend a few hours learning, walking and being entertained. I have been taking walking tours in New York City for 20 years and I have never been on a more fascinating, comprehensive, stimulating and educational one than this! Khira offers a depth and breadth of knowledge about New York City and the history of psychiatry that will make your jaw drop. The walk is lovely - a wonderful thing to do with visitors from out of town or people who've lived here their whole lives - and the pace is just right, but the real treasure is the knowledge you'll walk away with. You'll be amused at how many times someone in the group says: "Wow!" "No Way!" "That is amazing!" and how many times you say it yourself. Go - this is special.

Her lively personality, witty humor, and ability to infuse a fascinating spin on topics ranging from the Sackler family to the Butcher of Tompkins Park was unforgettable. Best Walking Tours in NYC by Fantastic Storyteller with Deep Knowledge

I took the Hell Gate tour and the Psychiatric History of New York tour, both guided by K. Krombie, the BEST, FANTASTIC storyteller with amazing depth and breadth of knowledge based on her thorough research/investigations of the relevant history. Through her tours, I, a NYC resident, was totally mesmerized afresh by the richness of the city’s history behind both familiar and unfamiliar landscapes, buildings, architectural structures, murals, etc., including those which no longer exist or were buried under the ground. I highly recommend K. Krombie’s guided tours to anybody, NYC residents and tourists alike, who are drawn to the curious and unique history of NYC. I am looking forward to taking her Death in New York tour next.

Review of: Hell Gate Guided Walking Tour in New York City

Krombie is a passionate and fun storyteller who took us on a whirlpool (excuse the pun) tour of the Hell Gate water from the vantage point of the fascinating and scenic Ward’s/Randall’s Islands. So much information was packed into a tour that covered such intriguing histories as sunken ships, spies, potter’s fields, burial grounds, explosions, movie locations, and the peculiar social institutions that once dotted the islands, as well as the institutions that now exist. Highly recommended for those who like delving into lesser known histories of NYC, and who like exploring spots that even some New Yorkers don’t know about.

Wonderful tour through the history of Hell Gate.

Review of: Hell Gate Guided Walking Tour in New York City

There were so many parts of this tour that I liked...It's hard to choose one experience. Among my favorites, however, was the tour guide's ability to tell the story of the history of Ward Island, Randal's Island and the surrounding area with such enthusiasm and command of the subject. I knew so little about Hell Gate, but came away with a significant appreciation for the journey people had taken to develop this part of New York City.

For future travelers, wear good walking shoes since there is a lot of territory to cover. Believe me, it will be worth it!!!

I agree with all the wonderful reviews I've read relating to K. Krombie and the 'Life and Death in Lower Manhattan' tour. I've been on other tours in the same area, but none can compare to the detailed researched information provided by our guide. Learned so much about the history of people and populations that lived during the early development of Manhattan. Good morbid fun in Manhattan

I loved this walking tour! Krombie is the history teacher I wish I had, with encyclopedic knowledge of fascinating and bizarre stories from New York City's past up to today. Krombie keeps it creepy, from the last U.S. execution for the crime of piracy to the jail where Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide (or did he?). She is clear, engaging, and great with questions.
